Six steps to a healthier, brighter you
As cold weather settles in and the days get shorter, mustering up the motivation to eat healthy and get moving can be a challenge. But why wait until January 1st to revamp your lifestyle? Beat the winter blues and jump start your New Year’s resolutions with these six simple tips:
Eat breakfast. Turns out, your mother was right – breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast boosts your metabolism and keeps you fuller longer, helping you ward off afternoon cravings. For a nutritious breakfast on the go, whip up a strawberry vanilla smoothie (see recipe box).
Lighten your mood. With gloomy days ahead in the forecast, many Canadians are looking for something to lift their spirits. This winter, look no further than a basket of California strawberries, available year round. According to researcher, Susan Bowerman, the soluble fibre in strawberries slows the absorption of carbohydrates in the body, which can help brighten your mood.
Get moving. Incorporating 30 minutes of physical activity into your daily routine will not only increase your energy, it will improve your mood. Embrace the chilly weather and make exercise fun with activities like skating, hockey or tobogganing.
Snack smart. Snacks are a great way to refuel your body. Plan ahead to ensure you have healthy snacks like nuts, fruit and vegetables on hand. For a scrumptious mid-day meal, spread low-fat cream cheese on a whole wheat English muffin and top with strawberries.
De-stress. It is hard to imagine a nightly bubble bath could whittle your waistline and keep depression at bay but according to researchers, a daily dose of relaxation is key to a healthy lifestyle. Researchers at Rush University Medical Center found stress not only makes you weary, it causes you to conserve more fat. To combat stress, take a few minutes each day to unwind.
Eat dessert. Treating yourself every once in a while is important to ensure you don’t feel deprived of foods you love. The trick: indulge your sweet tooth with desserts that aren’t loaded with calories. For a decadent treat, top fat-free chocolate pudding with California strawberries.
