In the blink of an eye
Don Hefner knows all too well of the importance of regular eye examinations. As an artist living in Saskatoon his vision is an integral part of how he lives his life and an essential part of his artistic passion. Without his optometrist all of this could have been gone in the blink of an eye. Don visited Dr. Chris Strelioff for a routine eye exam back in 2001. During this routine visit, Dr. Strelioff noticed something unusual about Don’s optic nerves. He suspected Don had a brain tumour and immediately referred him where his suspicion was confirmed.
The tumour was discovered in time to avoid any permanent damage or spread of disease. Don now has a very productive career as an artist, and is thankful for Dr. Strelioff’s quick response. He feels it is important for people to know how critical regular eyes examinations are not only for eye health, but overall health.
“It’s foolish to not get regular eye exams,” says Don. “Eyesight is such a terrific thing and really outweighs most things, at least in my life. If it wasn’t for my optometrist my life could be very different right now.”
Don says looking back that there were signs to indicate that something was not right but because he was a very healthy individual he ignored these signs and took no action. The eye exam pinpointed the tumour and ultimately led to its removal and, for that, he is very grateful.
