How Much Vitamin D?

A number of professionals in the health/nutrition field question the recommended amount of supplemental vitamin D required by the average Canadian. The Canadian standard is actually based primarily on the standard in the United States. Many point out that we get less winter sun that our southern neighbours, due to geography. That may be making a large difference in how much “sunshine vitamin” we get naturally.

It is estimated that a new study would cost only $1 million and take one year to complete.

The stakes? Claims that many diseases are affected by a lack of this vitamin. More that the traditional rickets; such as cancer, heart disease and multiple sclerosis. One researcher found evidence that the nutrient helps with diabetes and chronic back pain at doses higher than what Health Canada recommends.
