Herbal Healing – The Medical Practitioner is in the House

Lots of spices and herbs, commonly maintained around the cupboard, may be used for herbal healing to combat infection, sanitize and repair wounds, improve brain power and detoxify the body.  Be aware that several of these herbs have essential oils in them which are toxic in high amounts so should positively be omitted during pregnancy.  Consider the following:

  • Rosemary is my particular preference for herbal healing. It is known as the herb of remembrance (or the herb of chicken) because it increases blood flow to the brain providing increased memory, focus, concentration and mental endurance. Use the dried or fresh leaves and steep the leaves as you would do with tea.  Rosemary is also one of nature’s highest quality antioxidants as it helps prevent cell damage and aids the liver function to remove toxic properties from the body.
  • Tumeric is another effortless way to help destroy toxic properties in your body.  Furthermore, to diminish inflammation in your joints or muscles or elsewhere in the body, put 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder into a couple ounces of warm water and drink it right away.  If you dislike the flavor combine abit of cinnamon or chase it with some fruit juice.  This bright yellow powder is effective as a clothing dye, so be cautious, it may ruin your clothing!
  • Cayenne is a powerful, topical pain neutralizer.  Try this spicy, red powder for pain and inflammation of any type: joint pain, muscle pain or nerve pain.  Include 1 part cayenne powder with 5 parts flour, add a bit of water until it resembles a thick paste and then spread the paste on top of a piece of fabric.  Fold the fabric so the cayenne paste is in the centre.  Hold this to the affected area for 15 minutes maximum, watching for redness or burning. Also, shake a bit of cayenne in your socks to keep your feet snugly on cold days.
  • When you’ve got that sensation in the back of your throat as if you’re about to become sick, chew on some sage leaves.  The essential oils within the leaves are antimicrobial and should obstruct an infection.  A pure form of the essential oil may be put in some water and gargled.  Also, mash the leaves with a mortar and pestle followed by wrapping them in sterile gauze and apply on scrapes and cuts to clean the wound.
  • Parsley can be used for quick herbal healing of wounds, bruises, stings and bites.  Crush the leaves of this breath freshening garnish, then enclose them in some sterile gauze and put directly onto your skin.

Now you can see, herbal healing is practical from within your own home - it’s effective while cost efficient!
