Canadian women confused about planning for baby
By Ann Douglas
When you’re ready to get pregnant, you want to be pregnant right now. If only it were as simple as flipping your fertility switch to “on.” Any tools and tips that can reduce the stress of trying to conceive can be positively sanity saving.
What you don’t know about getting pregnant only adds to a woman’s frustration. A recent survey by the makers of First Response revealed that only half of Canadian women know that the best time to conceive is actually during ovulation and only 21 per cent of women state that they have very regular menstrual cycles. What this means is that while we may kick our sex lives into high gear, all that effort can be wasted conception-wise if you miss your most fertile time.
While the fertility on-off switch will remain the stuff of science fiction fantasies for the conceivable future, improved technologies in ovulation predictor test kits and pregnancy test kits can help couples to do what seemed like sci-fi fodder not so long ago: tuning into the ebb and flow of hormones that regulate a woman’s fertility. Ovulation test kits work by reading the surge of the Luteinising Hormone in a woman’s urine which occurs just before ovulation and when we are most likely to get pregnant. When choosing a kit, look for one such as the First Response Easy Read Ovulation test kit that contains enough sticks to test for a full week. This will increase your odds of being able to determine your best time to conceive during any given month.
Once you’ve accomplished the first part of your mission, the next step is finding out if all went according to plan. When it comes to testing for pregnancy, most women (65 per cent) seem to think that waiting for a skipped period is the best way to go. But for the 50 per cent of women who admit that waiting to test makes them anxious, why wait? Fortunately, pregnancy test kits are now more sensitive than ever. In fact, First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test kits can detect a pregnancy as early as five days before an expected period.
Keep in mind that conceiving is a numbers game. You can do everything right, but with roughly 25 percent odds of conceiving in any given cycle, it may take several cycles before you have luck. The key is to keep playing the game and to play it smart by using the tools and information that are available to you. Information is power after all.
