Women and Yeast Infections
Because their hormones constantly fluctuate, females are more susceptible to yeast infections than are males.
During the monthly cycle the levels of estrogen and progesterone fluctuate. At puberty, during pregnancy and at menopause hormone levels change. Oral contraceptives and hormone therapy also create high levels of estrogen and/or progesterone.
This is a main reason why women tend to get yeast infections when they’re pregnant, and also close to their menstruation.
It’s quite common for women to get yeast infections. At some time in their lives 75% of women develop a vaginal yeast infection. Not only do fluctuating hormonal levels encourage the growth of yeast, but so do stress and being run down, times of low immunity.
The symptoms of a female yeast infection can be:
A fishy or yeasty odor
Itching
Discharge
Pain during sex
Painful urination
Women need to take particular care of themselves when stressed.Because the female body fluctuates hormonally, women need to learn how to relax and should eat well to avoid female yeast infections.
You may believe that a healthy vagina requires feminine hygiene products like douches and deodorant sprays. You should think again.
According to many doctors, douching can do more harm than good. When you douche, the balance of microorganisms in the vagina becomes upset. You normally have small amounts of yeast and certain friendly bacteria in your vagina. But if the good bacteria are washed out or killed by douching your yeast levels can grow rapidly. You may experience the symptoms of a yeast infection when the balance of the body is upset.
Women’s hygiene products often have fragrances and dyes. You can buy scented intimate products such as tampons and pads, vaginal sprays, toilet paper and bubble bath. But the chemicals that scent or color the products can also irritate the vaginal area. You may get a yeast infection if your skin is inflamed already.
So choose unscented products, and avoid bubble baths and strong soaps.
Did you know the vagina cleans itself? Its natural discharges help protect you from harmful bacteria. That means it’s better to leave your vagina alone.
Here are some more hygiene tips:
Wash the external part of your vagina with mild soap or even plain water. That’s all you have to do to keep clean.
Always dry yourself thoroughly after washing, swimming, or exercising.
On the toilet, wipe from front to back, not back to front.
Give your vagina some breathing space! Wear looser pants. Nylon can keep dampness in, so wear underwear made of cotton
Following these pointers will help in preventing yeast infections in females. If you follow the right program you can be completely clear of yeast and feel energized, clear-thinking and free of pain.
