eye health issues

Glaucoma is a disease that attacks the health of the eye, and it can affect anyone. Even people who try to stay as healthy as they are able can still get glaucoma. It is, in reality, the name given to a group of diseases that work by destroying the optic nerves. Everyone is unique, so therefore, glaucoma is caused by different things in different people.

Anyone who is serious about eye health issues and about keeping their eyes healthy will make sure that they get regular eye exams. As we get older, parts of our body breakdown and the eyes are especially vulnerable. A glaucoma test is done once a year and is basically a puff of air blown into each eye. While this is not the most comfortable test, it is a very important test because glaucoma works slowly and can sometimes do a lot of damage before it is detected. If detected early, then there is a better chance of successful treatment. Once the damage has occurred, it is irreversible and that is why it is important to take your doctor visits seriously. This is also why it is important to have regular screenings for glaucoma and it usually starts with the peripheral vision. Without regular screenings for glaucoma it is possible for a large part of the nerves to be destroyed before anyone realizes what has happened.

Glaucoma is an eye disease that wreaks havoc by causing increased pressure on the optic nerve. The causes and treatments of glaucoma will be different for every person based on their own unique circumstances. Glaucoma tends to happen as a person gets older but it can affect anyone at any age. If you happen to have glaucoma in your family history, then you are at an increased risk for getting it. Making sure that you take care of the health of your eyes is crucial. The best way to fight this disease is to find out that you have it as early as you possibly can. Once it is discovered, treatment can begin immediately, and is usually quite successful. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done for the damage that glaucoma has already caused.

The health of your eyes is something you should always take seriously and never take for granted. Making sure that you have regular exams and letting your doctor know if you have any concerns with your eyes is especially important. Your eyesight is one of the most important senses and you want to make sure that you do everything you can to keep it working for years to come.

The eyes are sensitive organs that can be prone to many health issues. Acute glaucoma affects the eyes and is a very serious health concern. Glaucoma can be a very sneaky disease, in that many people are not aware that they have it. This means that it is very important for anyone to make sure they have regular eye exams. This will help, in the event that glaucoma is in its early stages.

There are four types of glaucoma, but acute glaucoma is different in that it can develop suddenly and do serious damage in a short amount of time. It usually works by causing pressure to be increased within the eye. Generally, this happens slowly and the person is not aware of what is going on. In this type of glaucoma the pressure increases suddenly and this increase in pressure is very painful. The pain can become so intense that it can make a person vomit and even lose consciousness. This is very serious and usually requires a trip to the emergency room. An eye doctor needs to be consulted immediately and if treatment is delayed, then eyesight can be permanently destroyed.

While glaucoma is an extremely serious disease of the eye and not something that anyone would want to have, acute glaucoma can be positive in that it draws attention to the fact that the individual does have this disease. Other forms of glaucoma are very laid-back and have no symptoms, so a person has no idea that damage is being done to the optic nerve. The fact that the other eye may pick up the slack is another cause of the symptoms being hidden. Most of the time a glaucoma attack is so painful that it requires a trip to the emergency room, and it is very clear that there’s a problem with the eye. When this happens professionals obviously look at the eyes and diagnose the glaucoma. This then causes the person to receive the treatment they need to stop the glaucoma from destroying their eyesight. Many glaucoma attacks will happen under stressful situations or in darkened rooms, such as movie theaters. The reason behind this is the pupil dilating in stressful conditions and in low light. The pupil then pushes against the iris and increases pressure, which can bring on the attack. There are some drugs that can cause the pupil to dilate, which again will bring on an attack.

If you must contract glaucoma then perhaps acute glaucoma would be one of the best forms to have. Although the pain may be intense, while other forms of glaucoma are usually not painful, the pain will alert you that there is a problem. This will cause you to go to the doctor and get treated for glaucoma before it causes you to go blind.

Don Hefner knows all too well of the importance of regular eye examinations. As an artist living in Saskatoon his vision is an integral part of how he lives his life and an essential part of his artistic passion. Without his optometrist all of this could have been gone in the blink of an eye. Don visited Dr. Chris Strelioff for a routine eye exam back in 2001. During this routine visit, Dr. Strelioff noticed something unusual about Don’s optic nerves. He suspected Don had a brain tumour and immediately referred him where his suspicion was confirmed.

The tumour was discovered in time to avoid any permanent damage or spread of disease. Don now has a very productive career as an artist, and is thankful for Dr. Strelioff’s quick response. He feels it is important for people to know how critical regular eyes examinations are not only for eye health, but overall health.

“It’s foolish to not get regular eye exams,” says Don. “Eyesight is such a terrific thing and really outweighs most things, at least in my life. If it wasn’t for my optometrist my life could be very different right now.”

Don says looking back that there were signs to indicate that something was not right but because he was a very healthy individual he ignored these signs and took no action. The eye exam pinpointed the tumour and ultimately led to its removal and, for that, he is very grateful.

Baby boomers entering their senior years are the fastest growing demographic in Canada and keeping pace with this steady influx is the matter of the ageing eye.

A recent survey about attitudes towards eye health was commissioned by the Canadian Association of Optometrists and it revealed that a majority of the ageing population does not believe it has any control over vision loss and are only likely to visit an optometrist when already experiencing a vision problem. This October during Eye Health Month, optometrists want to remind Canadians that vision loss is often preventable and early detection is key.

“People commonly associate eye exams with charts with the big letters but those days are long gone. Eye exams look inside the eye and can uncover changes in the eye caused by high blood pressure, diabetes, retinal disorders and glaucoma,” said Dr. Koltun, President of the Canadian Association of Optometrists. “Since there are more treatment and rehabilitation options than ever before, early detection is critical.”

Despite feeling healthy and being able to see clearly, a proactive approach to eye health is often overlooked. A comprehensive eye examination provides optometrists with information about the health of the eyes, and offers indications about diseases that also affect the whole body, like diabetes and hypertension.

Because not all eye conditions offer symptoms or warnings, Canadians are reminded not to take their eye health for granted. Following are some eye conditions affecting the baby boomers:

Glaucoma can result when excessive fluid pressures damage the optic nerve. It is one of the leading causes of blindness in Canada. Glaucoma can be effectively treated with prescription eye drops, and in some cases, surgery may be required. A simple and painless procedure allows your optometrist to measure the internal pressures of your eye. Early detection is the key to success when fighting glaucoma. Most glaucomas offer no pain or symptoms.

Cataracts are another common condition you may encounter. Cataracts occur as the lens becomes cloudy, distorting your vision. Cataracts are most often found in persons over the age of 55, but can occur in younger people as well. This condition often requires a corrective lens change or surgical removal.

Macular Degeneration is a disease that obscures a person’s central field of vision.

It is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness for seniors in North America. Early detection is the key to managing the disease – that’s why yearly exams with your Optometrist are recommended.
