Normally, the oesophageal sphincter, keeps acids and other substances in your stomach from returning to the tube leading to the stomach . When this sphincter malfunctions, it allows acid to move back up into the oesophagus.This valve is a ring like valve and closes and opens to allow food into the stomach,but is also supposed to close to prevent acids from moving back up into the oesophagus.

What is the pain causes by acid reflux
