Q- We are going to be discussing holistic healing on a general basis. Can you tell us how long you have been involved in holistic healing?

A- Since about 1961, I had just finished what they call my right of passage, in my tribe on my 12th birthday that is when I made my declaration to my elders that I would accept the passing of the mantle so to speak of the family Shaman from my Great Uncle Jacob to me.

Q- What does that entail or are you allowed to say?

A- Well I am here to demystify the mystical and they’re a lot of various practices and modalities around the world that have a hallmark of your either coming into womanhood or manhood and that is usually your 12th birthday.

The morning of my birthday my uncle Jake showed up at like 7 in the morning and we started walking and we didn’t stop walking till that night. This is a feat considering I grew up in Pittsburgh and we just started walking and eventually wound up heading over the bridge that connected you to downtown. Then through downtown off over another bridge and up into the mountains which were then populated but it was like the suburbs. We walked through there and back through another set of bridges back into town, crossed town and back into the mountains so to speak in the area in which we were living and then back down to the house where everyone was waiting with birthday cake and all this other stuff.

So it was a combination between Western society and with the regular birthday and doing tribal things. My background is African, Seminole and Cherokee. (more…)

Healthy Walk…Healthy Life

Are you still in doubt? Well you should not be anymore! Walking is definitely good for the body, reiterating all the doctors have been saying; walking is a good form of exercise. As one doctor implied, it is an activity that is near perfection and the good thing about it? It’s totally free! All you have to invest is your two legs and a good pair of shoes or slippers.

Workers, students, children and adults are encouraged to walk. Among employees, walking is a great way of including a simple exercise in their daily routine. For employers’ part, walking can help cut expenses because it can save parking space for cars.

According to a survey conducted in Britain, 2.6 million people or 10.8% are walking from work. Students and children are persuaded to walk not only for health purposes but to increase their self-confidence and independence.

As defined, healthy walk is a regular brisk walk (more than just a simple stroll) done purposefully to improve one’s health. It can include semi structured or structured walking activities done regularly and as a part of a person’s exercise regime. Walking is more preferred than jogging or running that creates a lot of stress to ankles, hip, knees and joints. To stress it out, walking have numerous benefits for your body like: (more…)

A Brief Guide on Seizures (Epilepsy)

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

A seizure is the number one manifestation or symptom of epilepsy. It is a sudden charge of electrical activity in the brain, particularly in the outside rim called the cortex. This abnormal electrical discharge drastically alters how a person feels or behaves for a short amount of time. Some seizures are totally disabling while other attacks can hardly be noticed.

Seizures vary from person to person. Each attack can last anywhere from mere seconds to several minutes, depending on the type of seizure. Some very rare cases can even last for hours! Absence seizures, for example, only last for a few seconds while complex partial seizures can last anywhere from 30 seconds to three minutes. Tonic-clonic seizures last for 1-7 minutes while the very rare “Status Epilepticus” can last for many hours. Prolonged and repetitive seizures can result to long-lasting damage to brain function. How and Why Skin Ages

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

For as long as one can remember, it has always been the pursuit of many to keep their youthful looks, even at great costs. And in this day and age, the trend has not changed. Now more than ever, methods, techniques and treatments meant to retain that “youthful glow” proliferate everywhere. As it is the most telltale sign of getting old, anti-aging goods and services account for billions of dollars spent in the hopes of delaying the onset of skin aging.

Unfortunately, many have been and are misinformed on how and why the skin ages misleading these same people into buying products that only offer short-lived, if not unsuccessful and disappointing, results.

It is therefore only smart to know just how the skin develops over time. In understanding the hows and whys of aging skin, the correct habits and treatments can then be developed to retain as much one’s youthful looks for as long a time as possible. (more…)

Epilepsy 101

Friday, September 7th, 2007

Occasional seizures, gnashing of teeth, speechless and foaming at the mouth. These are but a few of the symptoms of epilepsy. And about 2.5 million Americans go through this ordeal. In fact, almost 180,000 people are diagnosed with epilepsy annually.

Medical efforts have brought forth an explosion of knowledge as to how brains function and the connection to epilepsy. Although modern science has drastically improved the lives of people living with epilepsy, much has still to be done to help them live better and more comfortably.

Currently, neurologists around the world are exerting efforts to advance knowledge on the disorder. Epilepsy research is now focusing on the development of new convenient and more effective seizure medicines and how the disease affects intellectual and social development.

What is epilepsy and how serious is this condition? (more…)

What are Allergies?

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Stories of friends and family members unable to enjoy certain foods, participate in activities, or participate in particular environments are all too common.

In fact, 50 million Americans are estimated to have allergies. This means that a great number of people live with certain lifestyle ‘limitations’ by what we’ve come to know as an allergy, which is what an adverse reaction by the immune system to any foreign substance is called.

There is no clear apparent medical reason why people contract allergies, but one thing remains clear: the condition is indiscriminate in its coverage and may affect us regardless of age, gender, or race. Commonly, however, the allergy manifests in our infancy or childhood, although some symptoms may appear at any age or may reappear after any period of apparent inactivity. (more…)
